Planning Your Banff Elopement: Made Simple

Eloping in Banff national park can feel overwhelming if you're planning from another country or province.

After photographing couples across Banff National Park for the past five years, I’ve learned how to plan around crowds, weather, and seasonal conditions to create a relaxed experience.

Location Guidance

Choosing the Right Ceremony Location

This is the #1 concern couples have when booking an elopement in an unfamiliar place is finding the right spot. Hours spent trawling Instagram, Pintrest and Google to find inspiration. Banff National Park has incredible locations, but each comes with different rules, crowd levels, and accessibility.

I help couples choose locations that match the experience they want — whether that's a quiet alpine lake at sunrise or an epic mountain overlook.

You’ll receive suggestions tailored to:

  • Privacy and crowd levels
  • Accessibility & terrain
  • Sunrise vs sunset lighting
  • Seasonal conditions & weather

Check out the location map for inspiration.

Timing & Light

Planning the Best Time of Day

One of the biggest challenges couples face when planning an elopement in an unfamiliar destination is choosing the right location. Banff National Park is filled with incredible scenery, but every location offers a different experience with unique considerations.

I help couples choose locations that match their vision, whether that's a quiet alpine lake at sunrise or a dramatic mountain overlook.

You'll receive recommendations tailored to:

• Privacy and crowd levels

• Accessibility & terrain

• Sunrise vs sunset lighting

• Seasonal conditions & weather

Banff Logistics

Navigating National Park Logistics

Eloping in a national park comes with a few practical considerations and regulations that are important to understand before your day arrives.

I help couples navigate details such as:

• Ceremony location guidelines

• Park access and parking

• Seasonal road access

• Weather considerations

After more than 10 years photographing throughout Banff National Park, I can help you avoid common surprises, understand local regulations, and plan a smooth, stress-free experience so you can focus on enjoying your day.

Local Recommendations

Trusted Local Vendors

If you're travelling to Banff, you'll likely need a few local services to bring your day together and keep everything running smoothly.

I can recommend trusted local vendors for things like:

• Hair and makeup

• Florals

• Marriage license & officiants

• Private transportation

• Dining options

Working with experienced local vendors helps reduce stress, simplifies logistics, and allows you to stay fully present in the experience while everything behind the scenes is handled seamlessly.

A Relaxed Experience

A Calm, Guided Experience

Most couples I work with have never done a photoshoot before.

My approach is relaxed and natural, focusing on creating space where you can feel comfortable and present so the images reflect the real experience of the day rather than anything forced or overly posed.

You won’t be left wondering what to do or how to stand.

I’ll guide you throughout the process with simple direction when needed, then step back so moments can unfold naturally, allowing you to simply enjoy the time together and stay fully present in it, without feeling rushed or awkward.

Not only do we love our wedding photos but we very much enjoyed our time with Will.

Both my husband and I have never done professional photos and we thought we would feel a little uncomfortable about it, but Will made us feel super comfortable and we had a great time.

FAQ

“Where is the best place to elope at Moraine Lake or Lake Louise?”

Banff National Park has some truly beautiful proposal locations, depending on the time of day and crowds.

See the Google Map below for more information on location suggestions.

At Moraine Lake, for example, some of the most iconic views are along the shoreline and rockpile area.

Lake Louise, has some quieter spots along the lakeshore that often work beautifully for proposals.

Once your session is booked, I’ll recommend the best location based on lighting, timing, and how busy the area is expected to be.

"What should I wear?"

Obviously wedding attire is encouraged but couples where whatever feels natural, and expressed their individuality.

If you want my advice: When planning your outfits for a photoshoot in Banff and the surrounding Rockies, I recommend sticking to neutral and earth-tone colours—think soft blues, greys, blacks, and whites. These tones not only complement the natural landscape but also make it easy to coordinate with your partner without worrying about clashing.

In the summer months, feel free to add a subtle pop of colour—shades of blue or yellow work beautifully against the vibrant alpine backdrop. In winter, however, it's best to avoid all-white outfits, as they can blend too much with the snowy surroundings.

“What happens if the weather is bad?”

Mountain weather changes quickly, and dramatic conditions can actually create incredible photos.

If the forecast looks truly unfavourable, we can adjust the timing or location whenever possible. I’ll keep an eye on conditions leading up to the session and communicate with you to make sure we get the best possible experience.

Note that there is no cell service at Moraine Lake so we'll need to stick to the plan - the day of the surprise.

“What time of day is best for a proposal?”

Sunrise and sunset usually provide the most beautiful light and fewer crowds at both Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.

Sunrise sessions tend to be especially peaceful, while sunset offers warm light on the surrounding peaks.

I’ll help you choose the best time depending on your travel schedule and the experience you want.

"What if I want our shoot to be at midday?"

Midday in Banff can be very busy and the light can be harsh for photos. That’s why I usually recommend sunrise or sunset sessions — when the light is beautiful and the lakes are quieter.

Midday light is a photographer’s worst enemy: it creates squinting, harsh shadows on faces, and washed-out backgrounds that hide those stunning mountain views.

The best way to avoid all of this?

Wake up a little earlier for a peaceful sunrise session or choose the soft, golden glow of sunset—your photos (and your experience) will thank you.

“How quickly will we receive our photos?”

You’ll receive a small preview gallery within a few hours so you can share the news with friends and family.

Your full professionally edited gallery will typically be delivered within 4-6 weeks

You can expedite this process too in "Session Extras" for a fee.
